Fire/EMS personnel and apparatus throughout the county use the following identification system.

ODF 4200

SFD 4300

VFD 4500

MBFD 4600

CRFR 4700 / 4900

CFD 4800

The first number in all apparatus or people will be “4”, indicating Columbia County. The second number indicates the agency:

2 = ODF

3 = Scappoose

5 = Vernonia

6 = Mist/Birkenfeld

7 or 9 = CRFR

8 = Clatskanie

The last one to three numbers are agency specific and are usually assigned to a specific apparatus or person.

The Chief of each department is designated by the alpha character “C” followed by the first two numbers shown above; i.e. C43 designates the Chief of Scappoose Fire Department.

Personnel in each department use four numbers, beginning with the department identifier; i.e. 4901 or 4706.

Apparatus in each department use one to three alpha characters and up to four numbers for identification; i.e. M431 denotes a medic unit from Scappoose Fire Department. Wildland engines use four numbers for identification; the third number in the unit number indicates the amount of water the vehicle carries, i.e. E4723 is 200 gallons, E4530 is 300 gallons, and E4882 is 800 gallons.

Apparatus alpha characters are as follows:

C = Chief

CAR = Car

E = Engine

FB = Fire Boat

M = Medic

R = Rescue

U = Utility

WT = Water Tender
